Jaw Pain
Don’t let jaw pain interfere with the simple pleasures in life
The jaw or Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) as it is known in medical terms, is a complex mechanical joint system that performs a range of vital functions.
Not only does your jaw enable you to chew, speak, yawn, sing and kiss the one you love, but it is also closely connected with many other parts of the body. Other body parts intimately related to the jaw and which commonly suffer referred pain when the jaw is out of balance include:
- The neck
- The inner ear
- Your teeth
- The base of your skull
As a result of this connection, TMJ pain and dysfunction is common in clients who also experience neck pain, back pain, headaches or nerve pain (fibromyalgia). In fact many patients are surprised to learn that the cause of pain in these regions may actually stem from a problem in the jaw.
If you experience symptoms in the jaw region like cracking, popping, locking, grinding or stiffness, it may be a sign that you have jaw (TMJ) dysfunction.
How can an osteopath help relieve and prevent jaw and associated pain?
At Central Coast Osteopath we start by discussing your history before assessing the jaw and associated regions, looking for possible causes of your pain and discomfort. Your treatment may then involve manual techniques such as soft tissue massage and gentle stretching, not only of the jaw itself, but also of surrounding and related joints, muscles and tissue.
